Square vs rectangular hollow sections

The difference is the outside shape

A square hollow section (SHS) has equal outside width and depth. A rectangular hollow section (RHS) has different outside width and depth. Both are hollow structural profiles; the name alone does not specify the complete product.

Tata Steel's Structura brochure and SRMB Realfabrica's product information show square and rectangular hollow sections as separate profile families. Their published catalogues describe their own ranges, not Jabbar Traders' live stock.

Write dimensions so the profile is unambiguous

For an enquiry, write the outside width, outside depth and wall thickness in millimetres, then state the required length and quantity. For a square section, repeat the equal outside dimension; for a rectangle, state both different sides.

Add the grade or standard shown on the project drawing, any required finish, and a preferred manufacturer if the project restricts makes. Do not infer grade or standard from the section shape.

Use the designed section, not a visual substitute

A square profile is not automatically interchangeable with a rectangular one. Section properties, orientation, connections and loads matter. Follow the approved drawing or ask the project's qualified structural engineer before changing a specified section.

If the drawing is unclear, send it with the quote request and identify the exact line that needs confirmation. The quotation can then state what profile and specification were reviewed.

What to include in a hollow-section enquiry

List profile type (SHS or RHS), outside dimensions, wall thickness, grade or standard, length, quantity and unit. Include coating or finish requirements, brand restrictions, drawing revision and the destination PIN code.
